Author Biography
Baker, Josephine (Author)
Josephine Baker was an African American dancer who became enormously popular in New York and Paris from the mid-1920s to the mid-1950s. She began her career as a singer and dancer in 1921 in a chorus revue, the Sissle and Blake musical comedy Shuffle Along, and appeared in the revue of the Plantation Club in New York in 1924. She first performed in Paris at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in La Revue Negre in 1925 and from that date was a hit on both sides of the Atlantic.

Baker's lifestyle affected a liberation long before that term became popular in America during the late 1960s. During her successful career, she appeared in films, theater, and on television.
