Love Letters to Magnolia tells the story of an African American soldier fighting during WWI through letters addressed to his sweetheart back home. The love letters, written over one-hundred years ago (1917-1918), were preserved and found in a wooden dining room cabinet, wrapped in an old white handkerchief tied with a shoestring. Few have read about the language and culture of an era of segregation through the words of Ernest to Magnolia, two college-educated African American people in a society which had little want for their knowledge. Their story is one of determination and conviction, and is now being shared by their granddaughter, S. Charmaine McKissick-Melton.S. Charmaine McKissick-Melton, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University where she received the Board of Governor's Teaching Excellence Award in May 2017.
