This exhibition catalogue centers on the visual language of Pop Art and the nature of its quoted sources. In 1974, Lawrence Alloway wrote that in the era of Pop Art, “the mass media entered the work of art, and the whole environment was regarded, reciprocally, by the artists as art, too.” When Andy Warhol, James Rosenquist, Jasper Johns , and their contemporaries created art using the visual language of popular culture and mass communications, their audience usually understood their points of reference. Pop Art arose before the digital era; so many contemporary viewers see classic Pop Art from a different viewpoint, as historical art. The exhibition will shed light on the social context surrounding the creation of classic Pop Art and how our contemporary social environment has affected our attitudes towards the movement.
