Kulis was an outstanding Soviet Ukrainian dramatist. He first wrote in the vein of ethnographic realism, but went on to compose highly original ethnographic plays. The Sonata Pathetique is a vivid representation of the Revolution of 1917, which is allegorically presented as an expressive and profoundly tragic sonata. The play was staged by the two leading theaters in Russia, but its presentation was not allowed on the Ukrainian stage.
