More Description Tour with the Band! This book "EDDIE DURHAM with THE HARLEM BLUES & JAZZ BAND" (HB&JB) contains over 100 pictures! Many are in color.
By the 1960s, most legendary seminal big-band Jazz musicians, including Eddie Durham (1906-1987), were musically dormant for more than a decade. In Eddie's case, he purchased a home in Brooklyn in 1960 and raised his 5 children with his much younger wife, Lillian.
This book (v4) collaboration is with Dr. Albert Vollmer, Eddie Durham's Manager from 1977, wherein Al debuts his diary of Managing the tours of THE Harlem Blues & Jazz Band, both domestic and international.
It focuses on Eddie's re-emergence into public performances as a trombonist, arranger, and sporadically as a guitarist or composer. Included are all bookings within this decade, some are not with this Band.
Already formed, The Harlem Blues & Jazz Band slowly incorporated new members, including Eddie Durham. Al Vollmer was tasked with managing a traveling museum of living legends. How so? The members had collectively performed with Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, Bessie Smith, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Jo Jones, Howlin' Wolf, King Curtis, Duke Ellington, The Blue Devils, Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, Louis Jordan, Willie Bryant, Cab Calloway, Don Redman, Lionel Hampton, Erskine Hawkins, Eubie Blake, Fats Waller, Benny Carter, Billie Holiday, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Harry James and The Intn'l. Sweethearts of Rhythm, etc.
BONUS pictures: THB&J Band performs backing MAMA LU PARKS & The Savoy Lindy Hoppers.
A compendium will result when the SWINGIN' THE BLUES SERIES is completed by 2026. I hope you are enlightened by my labor of love. This is Volume 4, the 2nd release. Vol. 1 was released in 2021: "The Virtuosity of Eddie Durham. "Eddie Durham & The Ladies of Jazz" - Vol. 2, will be the 3rd release on Jan. 6, 2023.
