In 1962 she emigrated to Israel, where she taught English for eight years in a kibbutz. She only wrote one novel in all that time, but her dry spell ended with the Indian in the Cupboard, which went on to win various awards, was made into a movie and spawned a trilogy of books. Since then she has written over thirty books.
Her titles include Fair Exchange, Tom Country, The Spice Rack, and Polly and Jake.
