The Unshackled Mind: An Afrocentric Approach To Self Help, is based on the notion that African Americans must POSITIVELY reconnect to history. We must work to place our ancestors at the table of human achievement and accomplishment. However this must be done in a positive way that inspires, motivates and captivates rather than incite crippling anger and hostility. The Unshackled Mind is a blue print for such an approach.

CHAPTER 1 FAREWELL TO SLAVERY

We must come to the realization that there is nothing inherently wrong with us. We must finally learn that there is nothing wrong with our lips. We must learn that that there is nothing wrong with our kinky hair. We must learn that there is nothing wrong with our skin tones, in all of our skin tones, in all of our majestic shades! Study pre-slavery history. You will discover that your kinfolk's planted the seeds of civilization. You have a rich, proud heritage. Bow down to no one. Find out who you are, then set out to stake your claim in the world. The world is yours to do with as you think. Educate yourself! Examine your thoughts!

CHAPTER 2 ROAR WITH THE LIONS

Take the time to study the lives and philosophies of great thinkers. Put your own problems aside long enough to acquaint yourself with the lives of great leaders, inventors, educators, and achievers. Resolve to build upon the foundations that they laid by the sweat of their brow! Take your rightful place among the great lions! Remember as you begin to count your blessings, you will feel better. When you feel better, you will think better thoughts. When you think better thoughts, you will automatically attract more desirable conditions. When your time comes, you will let out a mighty roar!

CHAPTER 3 PERCEPTIONS

Re-examine the way you view your world and open your mind to the endless array of positive people and circumstances that exist in the world. Opportunities are often hidden. They are only visible to clear thinking, mentally focused people. I have often heard Blacks say that we have to be twice as good as Whites in order to survive on the job. Well, that may be true, but the questions is; what is wrong with disciplining yourself to be twice as good? Super-successful people in every walk of life will tell you that they had to be better than the next guy. That was their outlook; a driving principle that elevated them to great heights! Susan Taylor, General Colon Powell, Toni Morrison, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Jordon among others are arguably twice as good as their contemporaries. The world is full o achievers who decided to make themselves twice as good. Perceptions are simply the way you choose to color your world, however, you can only have the proper outlook by choice. The ball is always in your court!

CHAPTER 4 YOUR MIND...YOUR GUIDANCE SYSTEM

Our minds are the most powerful instruments in the universe. With our minds we can (and do) shape our futures. Find a worthy goal or ambition. If your thoughts are unworthy of your ambitions, get rid of those thoughts. If you are hanging around a non-supportive crowd, get a new crowd! A great part of having the ability to set your mind will be determined by your willingness to sacrifice long hard hours preparing yourself for eventual success. Great people are just ordinary people with extraordinary expectations! Keep things in perspective. Remember not to get caught up with certain negatives that might come your way. You must train your mind to search for the high road. Map out your destination . . . your life is worth the preparation.
